Strengthen your leadership with emotional intelligence (EI) skills. This course focuses on how EI can support people-focused leadership, helping you build stronger teams, handle conflict more effectively and increase engagement across your organisation. 

You’ll explore how leaders with higher EI make better decisions, foster creativity and ultimately drive greater organisational success. Through practical techniques and real-world examples, you’ll learn how to use EI to enhance team dynamics, boost collaboration and navigate challenging situations with confidence. 

Designed for managers and aspiring leaders, this course gives you the mindset and tools to lead with empathy and impact. This course complements Advanced Emotional Intelligence Skills for Business, which focuses on personal EI development. Taking both courses provides a complete understanding of how EI supports confident, effective leadership. 

Programme details

This course explores some of the key skills required to build Emotional Intelligence into your Leadership style. Through challenging material, self-analysis and reflection, this course aims to increase self-awareness in relation to team performance, and begin to develop more effective Leadership skills.

  • Introduction to Emotional Intelligence for Leadership: key skills to manage yourself and be an effective team leader 

  • Leadership styles: trying out different styles and working out whether they will work for you 

  • Key skills in EI for Leadership: dealing with conflict, good decision-making and building resilience 

By the end of the course, you will be able to: 

  • Take the first steps in using Emotional intelligence for Leadership  

  • Evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of different leadership styles 

  • Be informed about key EI skills to help with conflict handling, increase resilience and making better decisions 

Dates, Times and Delivery

This online course will be delivered over four sessions.

  • Workshops: Monday 1, Tuesday 2 and Friday 5 December 2025 (11:00-12:30, UK time)
  • Case Study activity session: Thursday 4 December 2025 (11:00-12:30, UK time)

You may be grouped into a smaller team for the case study activity and analysis.

To support the online sessions, you should actively engage in offline activities, such as the introductory tasks.

This is a ‘virtual classroom’ course, and is designed to replicate the experience of a classroom. The sessions are ‘live’ and are not recorded.

No attendance at Oxford is required and you do not need to purchase any software.

Details about accessing the private MS Teams course site will be emailed to you during the week prior to the course commencing.  

Please get in touch if you have not received this information within three working days of the course start date. 

Digital Certification

In order to be eligible for a certificate of attendance, you will need to attend the whole course. Participants who meet this criterion will be emailed after the end of the course with a link, and instructions on how to access their University of Oxford digital certificate.

The certificate will show your name, the course title and the dates of the course you attended. You will be able to download your certificate, as well as share it on social media if you choose to do so.

This course is delivered online using Microsoft Teams. You will be required to follow and implement the instructions we send you to fully access Microsoft Teams on the University of Oxford's secure IT network.

To participate you must be familiar with using a computer for purposes such as sending email and searching the Internet. You will also need regular access to the Internet and a computer meeting our recommended minimum computer specification.

It is advised to use headphones with working speakers and microphone.
