Master the art of identifying and surveying local plants, invertebrates, birds and mammals. Gain hands-on experience and scientific skills to monitor biodiversity in your area, and become a champion for nature in urban, suburban or rural settings.
What kind of wildlife can you find on your doorstep? How can you support local nature, be it in urban, suburban or rural settings? How can you alleviate the ongoing biodiversity crisis?
This course will introduce you to identification and surveying techniques for a variety of taxonomic groups; it will also show you how to approach biodiversity monitoring from a scientific and rigorous perspective. We will cover a range of organisms:
- Plants
- Mammals
- Reptiles and amphibians
- Birds
- Invertebrates
Not only will you learn about the surveying of wildlife, but you will become aware of the welfare and conservation implications of doing so. Throughout the week, we will also look at useful tools, technologies and resources for identifying species and mapping our findings.
Every day, we will try to incorporate a practical, outdoor session, to put our knowledge into practice. Combining both theoretical and practical components, the course equips you with hands-on experience of working with different species and habitats, which can later be applied in your local surroundings.
This course is part of the Oxford University Summer School for Adults (OUSSA) programme.
