Charles Jones

Student spotlight details

Student Charles Jones is currently studying on our Certificate in the History of Art, which he hopes will inform his work in art publications as well as his personal design projects.

'Two years ago, I quit my finance job in London to travel and follow my childhood passion for art and fashion, and have recently moved to Paris to work with independent magazines.

'I am a big believer in adult education, and have tried to pursue opportunities which have allowed me to learn and grow. I always wanted to study History of Art, but I really wanted to do it properly. When I found this course at Oxford, it was perfect because the certificate provides the in-depth study I was looking for with a hybrid model, so I can study in my own time alongside a demanding job in a different city. And of course, where else to study than at the best university in the world?

'So far, I have already enjoyed so much of the course. We are learning from some of the best professors and academics in the field, whose passion and knowledge are so infectious. We also have the Ashmolean Museum right at our doorstep, which is unique to Oxford and allows us to put our studies into practice. The course is filled with amazing people, from all different ages and walks of life, and has created a really warm, supportive atmosphere as we navigate the course together.

'However, I haven’t written an essay in over 10 years, so that’s obviously been challenging! What’s also interesting and challenging at the same time is that every reading introduces me to new terms, events and history, which makes me want to read more. As a subject, history of art is very expansive and crosses a lot of different disciplines like philosophy, archaeology, theology and science.

'In terms of planning for the future, I would love to continue art education beyond the certificate and find ways to apply this knowledge in my job working with art publications and in my own personal design projects. Learning about art is learning about culture and history, which is life-changing. I can already feel the difference in how I approach the imagery we see every day in advertising, cinema and music. I also hope these studies bring me closer to the art world, creatively or academically, and inspire me in my own creative practice.

'To anyone considering this course, it is never too late to follow your interests and passions. You don’t know until you try, so go for it!'
