The world is getting hotter and the eco-sphere becoming less and less stable. What was once described as the problem of climate change is now a climate crisis demanding immediate and dramatic action. This course intends to examine the subject of environmental ethics and look at how it can inform our responsibilities and our actions in order to help the planet.
Starting with an examination of how our relationship to nature changed with the emergence of anthropocentric religious beliefs, the course then goes on to look at positions like ‘shallow’ and ‘deep’ ecology before considering the status of non-human life and the importance and dangers of fire.
Ultimately, the programme addresses the relationship between environmental and business ethics before asking what, if any, duty we have to attempt to fix the problems which have emerged through the progress and advancement of human civilisation.
This course is part of the Oxford University Summer School for Adults (OUSSA) programme.
