Exodus tells the story of the liberation of Hebrew slaves from Egypt, but how does it relate to history and archaeology? Who was the pharaoh of the Exodus? Can the Ten plagues be explained? What happened at the Red Sea? Explore the Exodus story.
Exodus tells the dramatic story of the liberation of Hebrew slaves from Egypt. It forms an important part of Hebrew and Christian Bibles. Yet attempts to relate the stories to what is known from the world of Ancient Egypt have proved complicated. Is it possible to identify the pharaoh of the Exodus? Do the Ten Plagues of Egypt or the crossing of the Red Sea have a natural explanation?
Above all Exodus is a religious and literary text and the theological and literary significance will be explored. It also has an afterlife in the New Testament where the story of Passover and Red Sea is intimately linked with the Christian understanding of Easter and Christian baptism.
Finally, we will consider the way the story has been used in art, literature and music down the ages.
