Journey along the Thames to explore Britain’s diverse range of architectural styles and types of buildings on its bank – from castles and churches to country mansions, civic buildings and industrial warehouses.
The Thames is architectural as well as liquid history. A river on which to learn about the styles and range of British architecture seen along its bank. Whilst the course will feature the changing landscape from marshland to rolling hills, the main emphasis will be on architecture.
We will see house and military and naval buildings, both grand and humble; warehouses and industrial buildings in the London docks, and churches big and small.
The course will be illustrated with contemporary photographs, as well as paintings by artists such as Turner and Whistler. These records in oils, watercolour and engraving of specific locations and buildings such as Greenwich, London, Windsor and Oxford record the changing landscape and buildings over the past 300 years.
This course is part of the Oxford University Summer School for Adults (OUSSA) programme.
