Seminars and field trip
Monday seminars
After brief introductions to the course along with a course overview, this session will discuss music in England from c.1100 to 1560. Additionally, we will examine how London – and the influence of the Royal Courts – played a large part on the development of the musical scene in Oxford.
Tuesday seminars
On Tuesday, we will examine two influential composers, John Taverner and John Sheppard. We will take a detailed look at their influence here in Oxford as well as their compositional style.
Wednesday seminars
Today, we will focus directly on how Oxford University educated students in music, particularly from 1499 to 1700. In addition, we will explore the choral foundations in various colleges.
Thursday seminars
As we move into later time periods, we will now examine how the music scene was flourishing in Oxford (as well as some setbacks). We will look at the impact of Handel’s visit to Oxford and will visit the history Holywell Music Room.
