Sarah Parker (2021-22)
Student spotlight details
Sarah’s committee work with the United Nations often brings her back in touch with fellow alumni from the Diplomatic Studies Programme. As a member of the 2021–22 cohort, she reflects on her time in Oxford and shares highlights from the programme that continue to shape her professional journey.
‘I had always dreamed of studying abroad, and in particular at Oxford, but was fully engaged in my career and worried I was "too old" to go back to university. I was attracted to the Diplomatic Studies Programme (DSP) because it targeted applicants with professional experience, which I knew meant that the academic side of the programme would be enriched by students’ experiences working in international roles. I was also motivated by the opportunity to produce a dissertation as it meant there would be an opportunity to research and "deep-dive" on a topic of personal/professional interest, which was exactly the change of pace I was looking for.
‘Ultimately, the network, relationships and learning from my peers was the most enjoyable part of the programme. My cohort was an impressively diverse group with rich career and academic experiences, and we remain in close touch. It’s hard to say what I enjoyed "most" within the programme as it was an all-around excellent experience. I feel that I came away with a much deeper understanding of international law, economics and a more well-rounded understanding of the history and tradition of diplomatic practice and range of "diplomacies".
‘I had a wonderful experience within the Somerville College community, which offered a home-away-from-home with an incredible library. Many days were spent in the College library or in one of the beautiful Bodleian Libraries. Overall, the access to world-renowned guest lecturers, societies and activities across the university enriched the programme and made every persons’ experience unique to their interests.
‘After completing the programme, I returned to Canada and work at the Canadian Space Agency as the Manager of International Relations. In this capacity, I represent Canada at the UN Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (UN COPUOS) and often have the pleasure of meeting up with fellow DSP alumnus who are engaged in UN work. The DSP has enriched my horizons, built professional confidence as well as enabled me to transition to a new field of diplomacy with a solid academic foundation.
‘My advice to prospective students is to apply and don’t limit yourself! Oxford is a place for everyone and even as a relatively older student, and one with a young family, the diversity of the programme ensured that I found a community of like-minded and motivated peers who I am now proud to call friends.’
